The Committee’s projects seek to “restructure worlds and make living people feel stuff.”*
The Committee creates catastrophic theatre: We develop and produce work that focus on periods of transformation, on moments of transition where forces coalesce to create change. In the face of catastrophe, characters must create a new vision of the world to survive. Catastrophic theatre embraces the unknown and rejects easy solutions.
The Committee creates collaborative art: We encourage a shared experience between playwrights, directors, designers, actors, and audience while honoring each individual collaborator. We recognize the uniqueness of the individual artist and value “who you are” over “what you’ve done.” We seek bold design solutions to illuminate our productions. We are indebted to our inspirations, be they theatrical, visual, aural, literary, or social when developing work. We like Big Ideas.
The critics have described our work as: dystopian, seedy, oily, sunny, mystical, superb, charming, hilarious, sexy, downward-spiraling, beautiful, dazzling, witty, sterling, terrific, compelling, outlandish, frustrating, mystifying, versatile, awkwardly charismatic, numbing, nasty, clueless, complex, stylishly abstract, possibly metaphorical, evocative, rooted, real, oblique, impressive, good, ok, sympathetic, jovial, meticulous, postmodernist, hallucinatory, adroit, naturalistic, isolated, jarring, dull, surprising, meaningful, disparate, lonely, sublime, ambitious, familiar, bizarre, prophetic, smart, invigorating, daunting, flaky, neurotic, clever, polished, finicky, reflective, raw, unexpected, crafty, knowing, admirable, detailed, noisy, and meaningless.
